The little girl stood defiant before the dragon. The beast's claws scraped furrows in the floor as it came forward, teeth bared.
"Do you know why dodos went extinct?" The little girl said, raising the sword before her. It was like a large kitchen knife, single-edged and broad, with a short handle and no guard. The flat back of the blade was etched with runes. Undeterred, the dragon came forward on its legs, serpentine neck arched for the killing blow.
"Because they didn't know to be afraid of humans." Blue flames limned the runes as she darted forward to strike, trailing azure fire in its wake... and the dragon roared in surprise and pain.
Briefly.
